In order to use a picture I got out of the web I need to make sure I cite the page or author of it to avoid violating any copyright laws. I can know if the picture has a copyright or not by checking the date it was published. Any work that was published after April 1989 has a copyright even if it does not have a copyright symbol. Some pictures are published for the public domain and that means they are free to be used by anybody without any problem. However that picture must include the words "pubic domain" in any part of it in order to be valid.
For example the picture below was taken from a website...

Next to the picture it read: Image may be scaled down and subject to copyright, meaning that it is copyrighted and cannot be taken credit for or used for personal matters. To avoid an problems and violating copyright laws I will site the page I found the picture in:

Remember that if you get photos from a free website like Stock.EXCHNG you don’t have to worry about copyrights. Also, Creative Commons provides an alternative to traditional copyrights, with the “some rights reserved” copyright.
